Safeguards
ParetoLogic Privacy Controls provides safeguards to ensure that you do not delete items that are crucial to the functioning of your system or that you would need for running your applications. For example, when you click the Shred button, you receive a confirmation message (you can choose to disable this dialog). Two other safeguards described here are:
- Pre-defined settings for the Scan and Removal tool
- Confirmation dialog for shredding
Pre-defined Settings
You can choose the items you want to scan. When you first open the Settings window there are certain items in the list that are not selected - they have no check mark next to them. These are items not included in the scan. By default, these are not selected as they are items that you are less likely to erase. For example, you will not likely want to delete your email contacts for your email application.
With Privacy Controls you have the option of erasing these items as well but we recommend that you verify that this is what you want. You can restore the pre-defined settings at any time. For more information, see Scan Options.
Confirmation dialogs
There are certain files that are critical to the functioning of your computer. To protect these files ParetoLogic Privacy Controls offers a confirmation dialog when you attempt to shred them. For example, when you drag-and-drop files that are stored in a system folder as specified in the table below, a confirmation appears.
Items that will result in a confirmation dialog when selected for shredding include:
Type:
|
Location:
|
Windows system files
|
All files and folders located on or below the Windows folder. For example:
- C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe
- C:\WINDOWS\System32\DirectX\Dinput\glmda.ini
|
Once you have verified that the file is not required by the operating system, you can choose to shred it.
To accept the confirmation and continue with the shred process, do the following:
- Type YES in the text box.
- Click OK.
- Click the Shred button.
