Scan and Preview

When you run a scan, ParetoLogic Privacy Controls searches for all the items as specified by the Scan Options. During the scan you can see a brief preview of the items that are being detected for removal. After the scan is complete, you can preview any of the detected items and you can choose to select only the items you want to erase.

After configuring the Scan Options, you can begin your scan.

To run a scan, do the following:

1. In the left panel of the Main window, click the Scan button.
2. Click the Start Scan button.

Recommendation: If this is the first time you are running a scan or if it has been a long time since the last scan, it is recommended that you allow sufficient time to complete the scan. You can also have the scan running in the background and use other applications. Your only limitation is system performance. See System Requirements for more information.

You can also choose to cancel a scan. When you cancel a scan you can remove the items that were detected up until the time you cancelled.

To cancel the scan, do the following:

Click the Cancel button.

After cancelling the scan you can do one of the following:

• Click the Back button to choose not to remove any items and to return to the first screen.
• Choose to remove the items that were detected. See Removing Scanned Items for more information.
• Click another option in the left panel of the Main window such as Options or Advanced Shred.

With Privacy Controls you can also manually delete items on your system. See Advanced Shred to find out about permanent deletion using overwrite technology.

Previewing Items

After the scan is complete a summary of the detected items is displayed in each category where items were detected. You can expand and view this list and see previews of the items.

To expand the list of detected items do the following:

1. Click the More Info link next to a category name.
2. Click a plus sign (+) to further expand a sub-category.

You can get a preview of certain items that were detected in the scan including images, text files, and registry items.

To preview an item in the list:

In the list of detected items, position your mouse pointer over an item.

If the item is a supported format it is displayed in the tooltip area. With registry items such as keys and values, the registry path is displayed along with the key name or data value. If the item is not an item that can be previewed, the tooltip will display the filename.

Tip: You can move your mouse pointer over sub-categories titles and a description of what items are deleted for that category is displayed.
