Advanced Scan
The Advanced Scan, by design, is a more thorough scan and recover tool than the Quick Scan. It looks for files on the hard disk drive and analyzes them before displaying those that can be recovered. As a result, this scan can take considerably longer than the Quick Scan.
Note: We recommend that you start an Advanced Scan and let it run during a "down" time of activity. Do not continue to use your computer as you may inadvertently overwrite the data you are attempting to recover.
To select any of the Advanced Scan options you can click the associated check box. The Advanced Scan is capable of searching for the following:
- Selected areas
- Drives that are mounted and unmounted
- Text searches
Note: There is no guarantee that a file will be recovered in whole or in part. Much of this depends on how much free space is on the hard disk drive. If the computer system requires space to save new files it could write to areas of the disk that were being used by pre-existing data.
Selected areas to scan
You can select the associated check box to any of the options in the Areas to Scan section. This includes the following:
Area
|
Description
|
Recycle Bin
|
Includes files that have been deleted to the Recycle Bin but have not yet been removed.
|
Bad Sectors
|
Files that are located on a bad sector of the hard disk drive. While the system can not use these sections of the disk, Data Recovery can attempt to recover remaining data.
|
Unnamed Files
|
Files that have no information (filename or folder information) in the . This can include a file deleted from an old partition, a file in a bad sector, or any other location on the disk.
|
Old Partitions
|
Old partitions including those partitions that were once an existing partition but are now considered "old" as there has since been a re-partitioning or formatting of the drive.
Note: This option is only available for Data Recovery Pro version.
|
Note: When you delete a file it is moved to the Recycle Bin. When Data Recovery recovers items from the Recycle Bin, they are moved to the recover location. You can no longer locate and recover them from the Recycle Bin.
Note: There are some situations where parts of a file are stored in various locations. In some instances only part of the file remains as one or more parts are overwritten or are inaccessible due to a faulty disk drive such as a bad sector. Recovery will take place if the section of the file can be successfully retrieved and if the file type is known.
Mounted and Unmounted
You can choose to select any drives that are or in your Advanced Scan. If there are unmounted drives available to scan they will appear in the Unmounted Media section.
Text Searches
You can search for files that have specific text, referred to as a "text string".
To perform a text search:
- Click the associated check box.
- In the Search for text within deleted documents field, enter the text string.
Once you have made the selections, you can begin an Advanced Scan.
To start the scan, do the following:
Click the Start Scan button.
Note: By selecting specific areas to search you effectively narrow the search parameters and potentially increase the speed of the scan.
