ParetoLogic aims to make Internet waves more child-friendly with SafeSurfer
Concerned about the safety of families online, ParetoLogic, a leader in Internet security and PC optimization, is launching an exciting new initiative.
ParetoLogic's innovative SafeSurfer is a multi-faceted program aimed at improving online safety for young people. It will include three unique components, including an eye-catching, interactive website, community partnerships, and presentations at Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) meetings on Vancouver Island.
"Due to the nature of our work in Internet security, we are all too aware of the dangers that children face when using the Internet," said Amanda Cooper, ParetoLogic's Director of Communications. "SafeSurfer is a way for us to reach out and educate young people around the world as well as making a major impact in our home community. This is an on-going effort to improve the online world for families. Providing this service free of charge is a way for us to give back to the community in a meaningful way."
Online romances may offer danger rather than love
Some people, trying to find their soul mate on the Internet, have discovered machetes, fraud and sexual predators instead of romance. A number of incidents over the past few months demonstrate caution is necessary when looking for love online.
In July, a 56-year-old Australian man was excited to visit Mali, a West African nation, to finally meet in person the love of his life who he met online. Instead of being greeted by his bride-to-be and her promised gold bar dowry worth $85,000, he was met by a gang of armed bandits, according to an Aug. 13, 2007 Associated Press story.
They held Des Gregor, a wheat and sheep farmer, hostage for 12 days. The thieves stole the cash and credit cards he had on him and asked for $85,000, threatening to cut off his limbs with a machete if he did not pay up. Australian and Mali police teamed up to thwart the kidnappers by catching them at the Canadian Embassy when they went to collect their ransom.
Spammers use PDFs to drive up stock prices
Sophisticated spammers allegedly cashed in after using PDFs to drive up stock prices.
In early August, the largest spam spike ever - 445 per cent! - was recorded, according to MX Watch. This incredible flood of spam contained PDF attachments touting stocks for Prime Time Limited, a small Florida company.
This is just the latest example of the growing use of PDFs by spammers. According to Commtouch's Email Threats Trend Report for the second quarter, PDF spam is increasing. The report, which was released July 17, stated during one attack PDFs were part of 10 to 15 per cent of the spam in a 24-hour period. By using a common attachment format, like PDFs, spammers are trying to slip their phishing attacks past defences.
In the Prime Time case, the PDFs worked as people responded with their cheque books. The stock went up 57 per cent (from $.07 to $.11) in what has been described as a "pump and dump scam," an August 13 PC World article stated. In these scams, the perpetrators who have previously bought shares drive up the price and then sell their interest before the inevitable crash occurs. A few days later Prime Time Limited's stocks fell below $.07.

Does it all sound Greek to you?
Don't worry! Each month we will explain a word or phrase connected to the Internet. As well as giving you a better understanding of the Internet, you will also be able to impress your friends with your newfound knowledge.
Adware
If you feel you are seeing more advertisements than usual on your computer, you might be infected with adware. Adware is any application that produces, shows or directs a computer user to ads. It can direct users to business and e-commerce websites without their consent.

"I have purchased (RegCure). It is simple to use and seems effective and compatible. Very good to see Bittorrent added to filesharing!"
