Internet Security

Tip of the Month

Log offline when you are done for the day. You are most vulnerable when connected to the Net. If there isn't a good reason to remain online, disconnect from the network.

Questions & Answers

Q. I have PGsurfer and I really like it. However, it seems that it logs off often. Why?

Signed: "Tired of Typing"

A. Dear "Tired of Typing"
As it was created to help parents protect their children, PGsurfer is designed to log out after five minutes if the computer is not being used. This prevents children from using the computer while the administrator is away.

There are a few ways you can customize this to suit your family and computer use. In the Profile menu, please click on administrator and uncheck “Enable automatic logout after 5 minutes” or change the time frame (up to 59 minutes) for “automatic logout.” You will need to log out and log back in for these changes to take effect. Also, you could disable PGsurfer for a short time by clicking “Shutdown PGsurfer” on the top right corner when you are logged in as the administrator.

ParetoLogic earns high honours at VIATeC Awards

On a night recognizing the best of the best of Vancouver Island’s technology community, the ParetoLogic contingent was shocked to be honoured with two awards.

At the 2008 Vancouver Island Advanced Technology Centre (VIATeC)Technology Awards, ParetoLogic was awarded the Technology Company of the Year trophy. This prestigious award came on the heels of ParetoLogic winning in the Innovative Excellence: Software or Service Delivery category earlier on the evening of May 15. This award was received for PGsurfer, ParetoLogic's free, advanced parental controls software.

"It was such an honour to be recognized by VIATeC in two different categories," said Elton Pereira, ParetoLogic's CEO and Co-Founder. "We are very proud to be part of such a flourishing tech community on Vancouver Island. As well, we are pleased to have enjoyed such success in the past year. PGsurfer, which demonstrates our approach to innovative and effective software, is just one example of our accomplishments. It is a true team effort at ParetoLogic and we are excited to work toward more goals."

Your medical records online: Is it safe?

Have you ever been frustrated by the time it takes for your doctor's office to send your information to other medical professionals? Do you just wish there was a way they could just do a couple of clicks on their computer and have everything they need?

That day might be here, however some are concerned if this is necessarily a step forward. In May, a beta version of Google Health was launched. This online application allows physicians and pharmacists to upload patient information to it, as well as offering searches for medical professionals and allowing people to book appointments.

The launch of Google Health comes on the heels of Microsoft’s Health Vault taking to the World Wide Web in October of 2007. As well, Revolution Health, supported by former AOL chairman Steve Chase, is also online.

Cybercrime gaining more attention

Computer crimes are the second most pervasive crime in Canada. Online criminals do not limit their evil deeds to the Maple Leaf country. Thirty-eight people, more than half of which are from Romania, were indicted in the United States in May for phishing scams.

"This crime isn’t going away," Canadian Association of Police Boards chairman Ian Wilms was quoted as saying in a May 22 Calgary Herald story. "It’s actually escalating in size. The repercussions are huge if we don’t start focusing on this as a major priority of society. We can't afford to let the Internet become a no-man’s land."

Wilms' comments came after a nationwide study commissioned by the board was released. It showed that cybercrime, after drug trafficking, was the second most pervasive crime in the country. According to the 587 Canadians surveyed, 49 per cent were a victim of some kind of cybercrime, which includes identity theft, computer viruses, online harassment, child luring and pornography. Seventy per cent of the victims did not report the crime. Ninety-five per cent thought they were being targeted for cybercrime.

Don't worry! Each month we will explain a word or phrase connected to the Internet. As well as giving you a better understanding of the Internet, you will also be able to impress your friends with your newfound knowledge.

Home Page Hijacker:

Although they are not as common as they used to be, these threats are still around. Home page hijackers change your web browser’s home page to one of their choosing. This allows the hijackers to direct you to certain advertisements and websites. Home page hijackers can infect your PC in a number of ways, including downloading from a webpage. Or they might be part of a “web browser enhancement” that you download. Anti-spyware and anti-virus software with real-time blocking can help keep these hijackers at bay.

"I would like to thank you for your super quick response to my dilemma. It was rather bizarre. I had noticed my machine was acting a bit slow; but nothing out of the ordinary. So I do a little research and find your products (highly rated BTW). As I was downloading, I started getting messages on my desktop that my computer is at risk ....blah blah blah....then it turns red with this big biohazard sign in the middle. I freak. I had the weekend to play with it off and on; finally get my desktop looking as it was, then every other time I would boot-up it would come back and there it would be on your program ready to be removed. That's when I contacted you. Thanks again for your help.
Have a very Happy Day."

"Just thought you might like to see my face this morning. Here it is: :-)
Yep, I am all smiles. The scan was clean as a whistle.
Just thought I should say, finding your software was the best thing this dummy has done in quite some time.
First, XoftSpy SE found many files that my other security programs couldn’t find. I had run them all and been given a clean bill of health, yet, part of the Trojan remnants were still left on my computer triggering a false security alert and popping up on subsequent scans by XoftSpy telling me there still was a problem. When I had trouble ridding myself of that remaining problem, you guys at ParetoLogic Support came to my rescue above and beyond the call.
I thank you sincerely. You have won yourself a permanent customer and singer of praise. Thanks especially to you for your help and hand holding through this mess of my own making. If you wish, you have my permission to use anything in this email however you wish to let people know about XoftSpySE and, especially, the support that comes with it."
