Pareto's Perks

You are busy and always on the go. One computer can't keep up with you, so you use several - at the Internet café, at the library, a friend's laptop.

You never know what kind of spyware, adware or other malicious applications are already making their home on that computer waiting for you to enter your confidential information.

Award-winning XOFTspy Portable Anti-Spyware can protect you and your information from such threats as Trojans and keyloggers no matter which computer you are using. Operating from a portable U3 Smart Drive, XOFTspy Portable Anti-Spyware scans deeply to find embedded threats and remove them quickly. As well, it protects the Smart Drive so you do not infect others as you switch computers. XOFTspy Portable Anti-Spyware has a small footprint so there is plenty of space on the U3 Smart Drive for your files.

Questions & Answers

Q. A friend of mine told me that I can find free versions of any software I want just by doing a search on the Web. Is this true? I have a hard time believing that this is the same software that I would buy in the store.

Signed: "In Disbelief"

A. Dear "In Disbelief"
You are smart to be wary. There are some legitimate free applications out there that are great. Unfortunately, there are also many, many sites that are commonly referred to as "crack sites". These offer software that has been "cracked" and is not legally licensed for use. In many cases, these applications are broken or can harm your computer with malicious code.

XOFTspy Portable Anti-Spyware claims award at event honouring Vancouver Island tech industry

It was only fitting that on a night celebrating the achievements of the Vancouver Island advanced technology community that ParetoLogic's XOFTspy Portable Anti-Spyware would take home an award. The world's first portable anti-spyware application earned ParetoLogic the award for Innovative Excellence: Software or Electronic Service Delivery at the Vancouver Island Advanced Technology Centre's annual VIATeC Technology Awards May 23.

"We are very pleased to be recognized by VIATeC and to be part of Vancouver Island's thriving advanced technology sector," said Adrian Pereira, ParetoLogic's Chief Technical Officer and Co-Founder. "It took a big team effort to develop XOFTspy Portable. We are very proud of it.

"We are constantly working hard to create innovative products that provide Internet security and enhance people's computing experiences. We have some very exciting initiatives coming up."

The awards evening took on a bit of the appearance of a sporting event with the nearly 500 people in attendance waving "We're # 1" oversized foam fingers. The eye-catching orange fingers celebrated a recent report confirming that Greater Victoria's advanced technology sector is the region's largest revenue generator. The report states the tech sector generates annual revenues of $1.67 billion, which surpasses what is brought in by the old mainstay, tourism.

MySpace drops sex offender profiles, provides info to authorities

MySpace, the hugely popular social networking website, is quickly becoming a decidedly unfriendly place for lurking sex offenders.

In the first two weeks of May, MySpace eliminated the profiles of about 7,000 registered sex offenders, according to a USA Today report. The same article quoted Mike Angus, chief counsel for MySpace and its parent company, Fox Interactive Media, stating more registered offenders have been purged since then. However, Angus declined to say how many more have had their profiles withdrawn.

There are about 600,000 registered sex offenders in the United States. The 7,000 or so initially identified represent slightly more than one per cent of the total, a TechNewsWorld report states. However, the identities and ages of MySpace users are not verified so there could be more offenders using the site. MySpace has about 175 million users, according to TechNewsWorld. Many of its users are in their teens and are drawn to it by the large number of bands posting profiles and its social networking component. Lawmakers and law enforcement have realized sites like MySpace can be dangerous for young people.

Spam King nabbed but inboxes still filling up

A Seattle serial spammer was taken to the slammer and faces a wide variety of charges. However, is your inbox any safer?

Robert Alan Soloway, 27, was arrested May 30 after being indicted by a grand jury. The Newport Internet Marketing Corporation (NIM) operator is the first spammer federal prosecutors have charged with aggravated identity theft under the CAN-SPAM Act of 2003.

"Spam is a scourge of the Internet, and Robert Soloway is one of its most prolific practitioners," said Jeffrey C. Sullivan, United States Attorney for the Western District of Washington in a prepared statement. "Our investigators dubbed him the 'Spam King' because he is responsible for millions of spam emails."

Soloway, who was once sued by Microsoft, was arraigned on 35 counts of mail and wire fraud, aggravated identity theft, money laundering and fraud in connection with electronic mail. He has pleaded not guilty to all of these charges, which "stem from his alleged theft of identities and business names for his widespread email broadcasts," the Seattle Times reported. According to infozine.com, the spammer could be sentenced up to 65 years in prison. Prosecutors are also asking for him to forfeit $772,998, which they say came from unlawful activities.

Keylogger

Used in software development as a diagnostic tool, a keylogger records keystrokes into a log file. When used by potential criminals, this log file might be transmitted or e-mailed. Keyloggers can record passwords and logins, allowing intruders to access programs and web sites, including online bank accounts. Most keyloggers log all keystrokes.
