ParetoLogic Privacy Contols is a powerful application that completely shreds and eliminates personal information and files. It is so effective that ParetoLogic Privacy Controls' secure deletion function exceeds U.S. Government Military Standards.

This innovative software will permanently erase all information regarding your Internet activities. This includes the history of websites you have visited, tracking cookies picked up from various sites and records of crucial information such as passwords and credit card numbers. It also cleans files from such popular P2P applications as LimeWire, Kazaa, Morpheus and Bit Torrent Client.

Like all ParetoLogic products, Privacy Controls is easy-to-use. It features consistent and clear prompts to reduce the chances of accidentally deleting something you need.

Questions & Answers

Q. When running ParetoLogic XoftSpy SE Anti-Spyware sometimes it appears to quit or to restart. Why?

Signed: "What's Up?"

A. Dear "What's Up?"
It is likely that the scan was started and then you were asked if you wanted to update to the latest database definition available. When an update download is accepted, the program will download and restart. This will interrupt a scan if it is already in progress.

If you do not like this process, you could change the option of "Check for Updates Automatically" by removing the check mark for this item under General Settings. You could also download the database update at another time by choosing "No" when there is a popup when your scan begins.

When ParetoLogic office manager Marlee Wilson slid into the barber's chair recently her thoughts were firmly focused on her family rather than a trendy cut for the summer

Wilson was one of 16 members of the ParetoLogic team that had their heads shaved to raise funds for Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock, a Canadian Cancer Society fundraising campaign. In total, as of July 4, ParetoLogic has raised $2,542 for pediatric cancer research and programs, such as Camp Goodtimes, for children battling cancer and their families. Even after the heads had been shaved, pledges continued to come in.

Wilson, one of two women to have their heads shaved, had been thinking about participating in such an event for a while.

"The last few years have been tough on my family with over a dozen of my family members being diagnosed with cancer and we lost a few to the battle against the disease. I believe whole-heartedly in what the Tour de Rock stands for because I believe that no child should be robbed of the opportunity to have a childhood full of fun. By raising funds that go towards Camp Goodtimes, I'm helping a child with cancer have the chance to be a kid and have fun without thinking of the battle that they are waging everyday. If I can help take their minds off of that battle for a week, that makes me feel wonderful!"

"So in essence, I did this for the people in my life that have been touched by this disease, in memory of the people that I lost to this disease and to the hope that we can find a cure!"

Searches for nude starlets, online music are dangerous for your computer

Spending time trying to find pics of pop starlet Britney Spears nude on the Web could only be slightly more hazardous to your PC than searching for online music. A recent study showed that 20 per cent of sites returned when using a search engine to find Spears "nude" contained spyware or other malicious code. Nineteen per cent of searches to download music online turned up sites with similar potential computer damaging potential.

"The bad guys want to choose terms which they think are going to be popular, that a lot of people are going to be searching for," said John Aycock, an associate professor of computer science at the University of Calgary, in a report posted on the Online Computer Blog. "It's a reflection of our culture and the degree to which sex drives everything – not just the Internet."

However, not all online sex is the same. Searches for what was considered to be "adult porn" were classified as far less risky with the return rate of bad sites being only nine per cent, according to the McAfee report, which examined 2,300 popular searches. According to a June 4, 2007 Los Angeles Times story, the speculation of why porn sites are "cleaner" than online music ones is because it is harder to make a living selling tunes on the Web. Those sites might need the extra revenue that comes from programs that spew unwanted ads.

It seems only fitting that Spears once scored a hit with the song "Toxic." Trying to find her in the buff could be exactly that for your computer. As well as dangerous searches for her nude, fourteen per cent of the sites in a search for her "naked" were rated as unsafe. Even clothed she isn't safe, 10 per cent of the sites returned for a Spears search were considered risky.

Stalkers allegedly turn cell phones against family

Beware of your phone! A Washington state family – and their relatives and friends – are allegedly being harassed by stalkers who have seized command of their cell phones by remote control. Since February, Fircrest resident Heather Kuykendall and her family have received obscene phone messages and have had voice mails in which the stalkers threaten to kill all of the family members, including the dog, according to a June 29 Associated Press report. Their relatives and friends have also received these calls.

A June 20 Tacoma News Tribune article details the allegations that the stalkers have used the Kuykendall family's cell phones, and those of their friends and relatives, for eavesdropping, spying by using their own camera phones and sending them text messages, photos and messages using their phones.

"The stalkers know what the family is eating, when adults leave the house, when they go to baseball games. They know the color of shirt Courtney Kuykendall, 16, is wearing. When Heather Kuykendall recently installed a new lock on the door of the house, she got a voice mail. … The stalkers taunted her, telling her they knew the code. In another message they threatened shootings at the schools Kuykendall's children attend."

The situation has authorities buffaloed and there are allegations – even though at least four families allegedly have been stalked – that it could all just be a hoax. Pierce County sheriff's department spokesman Ed Troyer said the department has never seen anything like this before and one technician has spent 50 hours on the case, according to a June 29 News Tribune article.

"Everyone, even within the cell phone industry, is telling us it can't be done," Troyer said. Sprint spokesman Matt Sullivan said he has not heard of any technology that could do this.

Does it all sound Greek to you?

Don't worry! Each month we will explain a word or phrase connected to the Internet. As well as giving you a better understanding of the Internet, you will also be able to impress your friends with your newfound knowledge.

Dialer

This program can be particularly troublesome if you are still using a phone-connected modem. Dialers can access a user's phone line via a phone-connected modem and make unauthorized calls to expensive pay-per-minute phone services. This could cost a computer user hundreds of dollars in phone charges.
