ParetoLogic cycles, throws for charity
ParetoLogic team members are not about to let the possibility of sore legs or having a ball ricochet off their heads stand in the way of them helping out good causes.
In June, ParetoLogic employees climbed aboard the 30-seat Big Bike and rode around Victoria, B.C., Canada to help the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. Before pedaling their hearts out, team members raised money for the foundation’s efforts. In total, the squad contributed $3,070 to the cause.
"We at ParetoLogic were pleased to be able to do what we could to help the Heart and Stroke Foundation," said ParetoLogic Co-Founder Adrian Pereira, who
co-captained the team with Marlee Wilson. "Heart-related conditions hits close to home for many of us as it affects so many people. We were very pleased to see the good turnout from our company. Everyone was having fun and was very enthusiastic about doing their part for this great cause."
Heart disease is responsible for one in three deaths in Canada, according to the foundation’s website. The Big Bike Ride is a major fundraiser for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. The volunteer-based organization works hard to advance research and promote healthy living. This year the Big Bike will take to the streets of about 200 communities in nine provinces.
Also in June, ParetoLogic employees tried to evade projectiles in the Victoria Open Dodgeball Championships. More than 800 people on 87 teams participated in the event. This was the largest turnout since the event began in 2005 and organizers, at least unofficially, said it is the largest dodgeball tournament in Canada.
While it might have been a flashback to junior high gym class for many, the championships were about more than just competition. Prizes were given to not only the winners, but also the best dressed teams and individuals. The inspired dodgeballers pulled on such garb as super hero capes, military fatigues, fake afros and even pink tutus.
More important than silly costumes and competition, the championships aided two local causes. It raised funds for City of Victoria youth programs and the Burnside Gorge community centre, which provides a variety of resource programs and services to children and families.
